What I Do To My Hair Before & After Swimming

I spend most of summer at the beach, the pool and anywhere outdoors. And I love effortless, beachy, wavy hair. But the effects of salty water, the sun, chlorine can turn my summer tousled hair into a dry, matted mess. Here's how I manage to turn my dry, damaged mop into glossy, healthy waves.

IN THE POOL
I always apply a deep conditioner before swimming so there's a barrier between my hair and the chlorine water. Lately, I've been really happy using the OUAI Treatment Masque through my hair, then braiding it, before entering the pool. And the braid holds the treatment while I'm swimming. Bonus.
Post-swimming, my hair really needs a clarifying shampoo, and at the moment I'm using Kevin Murphy's Detox Shampoo, followed by a deep conditioner. After cleansing and conditioning my hair, I use an old cotton t-shirt to gently squeeze out the excess water, instead of drying my hair with a towel, so that it doesn't become damaged and frizzy.

IN THE OCEAN
Before any exposure to the sun, sea and salt, a deep conditioning hair mask and a great UV serum is key. The sun will help protect it from the drying properties of the salt water.
After swimming in the surf, rinsing my hair in fresh water is a great way to restore its alkaline properties, and I always use a demineralizing shampoo and hydrating conditioner.
