The Alkaline Lifestyle

The Alkaline Lifestyle is followed by many supermodels and celebrities alike, including Victoria Beckham, Kate Hudson, Elle Macpherson, Gisele Bundchen and Gwyneth Paltrow. I've been following this phenomenal low-acid diet for a few years, and I can guarantee that it truly works in transforming the body. Here are the deets on the philosophy of this alkaline diet.

What is an alkaline diet?
The philosophy of the alkaline diet is really simple; fueling your body with alkaline-rich foods, and therefore lowering your intake of acidic products, naturally balances and regulate your pH levels so the digestion system doesn't have to work so hard.
When you're pumping damaging acids into your body all day long, your body has to work so much harder to maintain its pH levels, which not only drains your energy storage, but also affects your body's ability to heal itself.
Some foods are easy to digest - like eggs, dark leafy greens and fresh fruit like avocado. Other foods are harder to break down in the digestive system - like corn, dairy and gluten. Following a low-acid liefstyle simply takes this idea a step further.

Acidic vs Alkaline
The body's pH system can be classified into three categories; 10.0 is alkaline, 7.0 is neutral and 3.0 is acidic (0 is pure acid). Your body naturally tries to maintain a slightly alkaline level of approx 7.3-7.4. However, our lifestyles and eating habits often pump our bodies with acid, which throws off the body's natural pH levels.
So, it's all about eating fewer acid-pumping products and more alkaline foods. Most fruits and vegetables are naturally alkaline, including lemons, limes and even tomatoes. They're easy to metablise and become alkaline within the digestive system, due to their high mineral and low sugar content. On the contrary, foods that you might not expect to be acidic, such as bread, dairy, pasta and meat, are full of harmful and damaging acids.

The Eating Plan
The Alkaline Lifestyle is not about extremes, it's about balance. Going alkaline isn't about deprivation, it's about moderation. and I generally follow the 80/20 rule. My daily food intake is 80% alkaline based and 20% acidic based. I consistently strive to make vegetables, healthy fats, whole grains and low-sugar fruits the main part of my daily diet. And I limit my consumption of dairy and meat, which are highly acidic in the digestion system. I have also completely eliminated alcohol from my diet, which has been amazing for my overall health and well being.
The best alkaline fruits include lemons, limes, avocado, coconut and pomegranates. The best alkaline vegetables include tomatoes, capsicum, celery and broccoli. It's important to limit your intake of more acidic fruits like apples, bananas, grapes, oranges, strawberries, apricots, pineapples and dried fruits. Gisele Bundchen has also eliminated potatoes from her diet - they're the one vegetable that is highly acidic. I love incorporating lots of salads and smoothies into my diet so that I get a large variety of alkaline-based foods.

Misconceptions
Yes, there are some critics of the alkaline approach. Some people state that it's unnecessary to eat and drink alkaline because we can't "change" our blood pH levels. But the purpose of this lifestyle is to make it easier for the body to maintain a balanced pH system, by nourishing it with the minerals and nutrients in order to neutralise any acids. Alkaline foods essentially help the body fight damaging acids within the digestive system, which in turn allows the body to store more energy and heal at a faster rate.

What To Expect
Since I've gone alkaline (following the 80/20 rule) I have seen a dramatic transformation in all areas my health and well being. My body is lean and no longer feels bloated after a big meal. I no longer have skin issues and my complexion is blemish-free and more radiant. I feel more focused because I sleep better each night. And I rarely feel under the weather or down. More importantly, I have a tonne more energy and no longer feel lethargic in the afternoons. The days of craving empty sugars are gone.
The fastest way to neutralise the acids that cause these types of problems is to increase your intake of calcium, magnesium and potassium. And the benefits are enormous.
so, if you want loads more energy, a stronger immune system, improved digestion, skin that glows and a leaner body, then definitely give alkaline a go. Personally, I've never looked back.

These books are great resources regarding alkaline foods and helped me become more mindful about my body.
