I like maxi skirts. I really do. They give the impression of boho-I-just-put-this-together-at-the-last-minute-citychic. But I find that SOMETIMES they can be more frumpy than fantastic. So I think there are a few guidelines when putting together an outfit that involves a maxi skirt. For me, the first rule is what I call 'two-thirds vs one-third'. Two thirds = your lower body (flowy maxi skirt) and one-third = upper body (shirt and cropped jacket). I find that a long top paired with a long skirt is just way too hippy-circa-1979. Secondly, if the skirt has a print or a split (or both) keep the top quite simple (a crop-tank, little plain tee, denim/white shirt). I love the trend of adding a cropped leather or denim jacket as well. Very cool. With open-toe heels, boots or sandals.
